LANSING – State Representative Pam Byrnes (D-Lyndon Township) today praised a new Web site intended to ease the transition process by helping students transfer as many credits as possible from one institution to another.

"This is a terrific Web site and will help our kids maximize their education without spending excess money on repeat classes," Byrnes said. "This is a great opportunity for our students."

The Michigan Transfer Network (MTN), created in collaboration by Michigan State University, the Michigan Association of College Registrar and Admissions Officers and the Presidents Council, State Universities of Michigan, is designed to help eliminate the confusion that often accompanies transferring from a two-year community or junior college to a four-year university. The Web site is not only for students transferring from community colleges to universities, but for anyone transferring from one school in Michigan to another.

The Web site will help students choose the proper courses and tells them which courses transfer where.  Byrnes also noted the Web site was created based on a recommendation by the Cherry Commission, which called for higher education institutions to "create a statewide 'transfer wizard' Web site containing course articulation and transfer information for all Michigan higher education institutions; and establish the Michigan Milestone Compact, granting an associate's degree to a student transferring from a community college to a four-year degree-granting institution following completion of necessary course work."
